News: Marimekko to close its factories in Finland

Marimekko’s own production has always been a central aspect of creating and developing its Nordic signature design, with three factories in Finland: the fabric printing works in Helsinki, the clothing factory at Kitee, and the bag factory in Sulkava. At present, Marimekko’s own plants has produced almost half of all the products sold by the company.

Marimekko stated in their press release this May that the negotiations, initiated in March 2013 by Marimekko
Corporation on potential permanent staff reductions concerning the personnel of its manufacturing operations and the adjacent factory outlets located in Sulkava and Kitee, Finland, has led to the result that Marimekko is to close its production plants in Kitee and Sulkava as well as their adjacent factory outlets. This will affect 60 jobs in total.
The reductions in staffing and other actions to be effected are expected to bring an approximate total of EUR 1.0 million in annual cost savings. The aim is to increase profit and to secure business competitiveness in the future.

Inspirational from Designers Remix collection for Pre Autumn 2013

I know we’re still waiting for summer to arrive. But on a rainy and grey day in May I thought I’d might as well share a sneak preview on some gorgeous pre autumn news landing in stores mid June. From Danish designer label Designers Remix comes oversized coats, jumpers, trousers, shorts and skirts in the chic but slightly sporty look we’ve become to love.

I remember my mum had similar white court shoes in the 80’s and as a child I always though they were beautiful.

The red ensemble is to die for, with a simple oversized jumper matched together with a asymmetric skirt. Very bold indeed.

DEFINING SCANDINAVIA -the trade show for Design & Living

Defining Scandinavia launched this January, exhibiting a well curated selection of everything within Design & Living. Situated in the trendy and historical Øksneshallen (used to be a slaughter house in the oden days) in Copenhagen, the show was an immediate success with exhibitors, buyers and press alike.

And now the next show is coming together! Season 2 of Defining Scandinavia will take place 8th – 11th August 2013.

Defining Scandinavia presents the most distinctive trends, and in the August 2013 edition they will focus on ‘Functional Moxie’. ‘Moxie’ is colloquial slang for courage, daring and spirit. Using the term ‘Functional Moxie’, Defining Scandinavia accepts the challenge, focusing on the way existing trends, put in a new functional context, addresses the genre of design and living. We aim to embrace functionality by daring to choose only value-adding everyday objects. Sounds interesting?

From a rural Swedish island to New York – Meet Carin Rodebjer

Originally from the Swedish island, Gotland, a rural place in the middle of the Baltic Sea. She grew up on a farm far away from fashion. But her growing interest of clothes and sewing was nurtured by her mothers love of textile crafts.
carin_rodebjer

Carin then decided to move to New York to study fashion at F.I.T (Fashion Institute of Technology). This opened up a whole new world, and soon after her own brand RODEBJER was founded. Her design philosophy is based on wardrobe essentials in combination with items catching the zeitgeist:

“I respect history and I am sensitive to the future, translating it into both long-lasting style and fashion forward items. I believe in a style that is effortlessly elegant without loosing comfort, allowing women the luxury to get on with life without restriction.”

When visiting London Fashion Week last February, RODEBJER was one of the brands that really caught my eye in the Scandinavia Exhibition. Highly wearable pieces finished beautifully in luxurious fabrics.

And when seeing the promo video for RODEBJER Spring Summer 2013, I can’t help to think that Carin is taking great pride in her Swedish island origin, and that she still holds nature close to heart. Here are a few stills from the beautiful film, shot by Rebecca Palmer, longtime friend of RODEBJER, styled and directed the film.

The RODEBJER Spring Summer 2013 video was filmed on a deserted Atlantic beach, during the sunrise and sunset of one single day. The vast ocean acted as backdrop in the east, with glimpses of lights from New York City in the long distant horizon. The video features India Salvor Menuez, an artist and actress of New York’s Lower East Side.
